Day 17.

Time to pay attention to the little things in life, like the older cat's grey upper lip and a cute little tooth poking out when he sleeps. DD got a care package from her aunt, a Marimekko bag filled with pressies. And a loaf of bread, her fav. kind.

Tänään oli aikaa ihmetellä pieniä asioita kuten vanhemman kissan harmaata ylähuulta ja hassua pientä vampyyrihammasta, joka töröttää kun kissa nukkuu. Likka sai lahjapaketin, Marimekon laukku täynnä ylläreitä, ml. ruiskakko. Hyvvee.

Day 16.

Cold and rainy, very uninspiring. So a day spent reading and making a leftover soup of potatoes, carrots, onions, lentils and coconut milk, served with cashews. DD is practising her new figure skating programme, it's much more difficult than her previous one so she is very excited and a little nervous. too.

Typerä sadeilma. Onneksi kävin eilen kirjastossa! Ruokana jämäsoppaa, johon tyhjensin kaappeja: perunaa, porkkanaa, sipulia, linssejä ja kookosmaitoa, ja cashewpähkinöitä. Nam. Likka harjoittelee uutta kilpaohjelmaa, joka on paljon vaativampi kuin edellinen: onneksi se tykkää haasteista.

Day 15.

Went to the library and got a couple of books to keep me entertained, can't wait to get started with the reading!

Ran into a neighbour who lost her husband about a month ago, and I just found out about it a week ago. They had been married for over 50 years and his death was a very unexpected and sudden one, she said he died in less than 5 minutes. We chatted a little and she said something that touched me: "after over 50 years, I still would have had so many things to talk about".

Kirjastopäivä, kohta aloitan lukemaan saalista. Törmäsin rappukäytävässä naapurin rouvaan, jonka mies oli kuollut äkillisesti kuukausi sitten, sairaskohtaus vei miehen viidessä minuutissa. Rouva sanoi jotain, joka jäi soimaan korviin ja vähän omaantuntoonkin: "vaikka oltiin yli 50 vuotta naimisissa, niin vielä olisi ollut asioita, joista olisin halunnut puhua".

Day 14.

Lovely lovely Sunday. Walk around the market square, they had a flea market going on, and of course, coffee :) Last night sushi and laughs with friends, today mother-in-law's mushroom pie.
Life continues to be good.

Day 13.

Early morning wake-up call, DD to the ice hall at 7 am, afterwards shops, coffee at the market square, cleaning, laundry, soon start preparing sushi for a ladies' dinner. DH at his parents'. DD quit eating meat, worked out a protein plan for her, incl. one serving of nuts per day. Good thing she likes nuts and almonds.

Pentu seiskaksi jäähallille, eli aikainen aamu, sitten samaan putkeen kaupat, torikahvit, siivous, pyykkäys, kohta riisit kiehumaan sushia varten, naisten illallinen klo 19. Isäntä vanhempiensa luona mökillä.

Day 12.

I watched a documentary about how supermarkets throw out food that has not even reached its best before-date and how much of e.g. veggies never make it to the shops because they are the wrong size or shape. Looked into the waste matter from a household point of view and found this Finnish study.

My parents had a garden at our summer house where they grew veggies and potatoes, enough to get us through the winter, and a little to give out to other families, too. We had endless bushes of gooseberries and currants. We went to the forest for blueberries, lingonberries and mushrooms. Nothing was wasted, leftover were used efficiently. Also, my mom had a good pantry, with stables to get us through if money was low or we didn't make it to the shops.

I don't have a kitchen garden but I do have a pantry. Now I just need to make sure that nothing goes out of date. And make sure I don't buy stuff we don't use. Definately making that one of my goals for the year.

Katsoin dokkarin siitä miten paljon kaupat ja tukut laittavat ruokaa jätteeksi, ja miten yhä useammat meistä eivät enää tiedä mistä ruoka tulee ja miten se kasvaa. Muistelin että hiljattain olin lukenut jostain suomalaisia lukuja kotitalouksien tuhlaamisesta, ja ne löytyivät täältä.

Vanhemmillani oli kesämökillä kasvimaa, joka ruokki meidät ja muutamat muutkin. Lisäksi pihassa oli marjapuskia, ja metsästä saatiin sienet, mustikat ja puolukat (vaikka muistelen että osa ostetettiin naapurin tädiltä, joka hankki elantonsa pääsosin marjanpoiminnalla). Ja äidillä oli pakastimen lisäksi kuiva-ainekaappi, josta sai loihdittua vaikka mitä.

Meillä ei ole kasvimaata, enkä käy keräämässä metsän antimia. Mutta kuiva-ainekaappi on. Tämän vuoden tavoitteiden joukkoon lisättiin just ruokatalouden järkeistäminen tässä huushollissa.

Day 11.

Woke up to a chilly morning, took kid to the ice hall, bought a new jump rope (or is it called a skipping rope?) for her and got back home to spend some quality time with laundry and the hoover. By the way, bying a jump rope for a ten-year-old figureskater is a major task, the requirements are very specific....anything with nylon or heavy weight rubber will not do, because they do double skips and if they miss, the rope hits them on the back. Outch.

Pahuksen kylmä aamu, ainakin vähän kuuden jäljestä kun mentiin jäähallille. Pikainen pyöräily kaupoille, kolmannessa urkkakaupassa oli oikeanlainen hyppiskä lapselle, joka on hävittänyt omansa tai tunkenut sen lähimmän seurakaverin kassiin. Pyykkiä ja imurointia, mikäs tässä.

Day 10.

Routines shaping up, menu plans being made (DD went vegetarian at home for a trial period), cats being fed. Pumpkin seeds roasted on a dry pan with a pitch of garlic powder and a splash of soya sauce make a yammy snack.

Likka koittaa miltä tuntuu olla kasvissyöjä, koulussa syö vielä lihaa. Paahdetut kurpitsansiemenet on loistavia -- paahdetaan varovasti kuivalla kuumalla pannulla, sekaan vähän valkosipulijauhetta ja lopuksi loraus soijakastiketta. Nam.

Day 9.

Ran some errands and donated blood. Took the older cat out, watched Criminal Minds online. Got an unexpected visitor on the sofa as the younger car decided I would do in DH's absence. Our cats have their designated humans, I'm the chosen one for the older cat and the younger turns to DH for cuddles, normally.

Pieniä asioita kaupungilla ja verenluovutuskeikka. Criminal Minds netistä. Lienen koukussa? Pikkukissa Muru päätti että kun isäntä ei ole kotona, niin minä saan kelvata, ja hyppäsi sohvalle puskemaan. Aksu on yleensä mun perässä ja Muru isännän. Kiitän luottamuksesta.

Day 8.

Sunny on a Monday morning! I'm squeezing in all the housework to the morning hours so I can do fun stuff in the early afternoon before DD comes home. Learning to like oatmeal again, and making lists on whatever paper I can find.

Aurinko paistaa ja on maanantai, outo yhdistelmä. Koitan saada kotihommat tehtyä heti aamusta, niin sitten saapi hauskuuttaa itseään muilla tekemisillä loppupäivän. Palautin kaurapuuron kuvioihin, ja listojen tekemisen.

Day 7.

Ah, Sunday, my fav day of the week. One can sleep in, or not, play boardgames, pretty much do whatever one's heart desires. DD slept late with a silly little flower in her hand. Our Monopoly is in German, to add to the excitement.

Sunnuntait on parhaita, saa nukkua myöhään tai herätä ajoissa, pelata Monopolia, tehdä mitä huvittaa. Lapsi nukkui tivolista saatu kukka kädessään.

Day 6.

A bit of silliness on a Satuday, but only after DD's morning practise was over :) Cups of coffee with family and friends, watching telly with DH while DD spent most of her day here.

Likan aamuharkkojen jälkeen kahvia ensin Jokiasemalla, sitten Martoilla. Yleistä laiskottelua sillävälin kun likka riehui Suomen Tivolissa kaverinsa kanssa. Mukava lauantai!

Day 5.

Took Aksu the Cat for his walk around the backyard. Ugliness meets prettiness there. The sun is out, so I'm outta here, too :)

Day 3.

Working towards a routine with school and practise and everything. Loving the quiet moment in the morning when DD is still asleep and I'm having my first cup of tea. The cats are happy, too, as they think they are getting an extra meal every day -- little do they know.

Lukujärjestykset ei vielä valmistuneet, harkka-ajat on tiedossa, kaikkea sovitellaan yhteen. Aamuinen teekuppi hiljaisuudessa on ihan paras. Kissa-parat luulevat että täällä tarjoillaan nykyisin myös lounasta.

Rainy morning, DD set off to 5th grade and I enjoyed my coffee in (relative) silence. The renovations are still on, so there is a heavy duty lifter thingie right outside of our balcony. Maybe they will finalise it today??

Pilvinen, sateinen aamu. Kävin viemässä likan luistimet hallille teroittajaa varten ennen seitsemää. 5. luokka alkaa klo 9 ja mulla on kahvitauko ennen päivän puuhia.

Day 1.

Busy day, but tons of fun. Took DD and her friend out for breakfast, then left them in town to do some shopping. DD made lunch for them, while I set out to the ice hall for the season's opening. The little kids on skates are always supercute, like bambis on ice. DD found a new dress, but told me not to post of photo because her hair was not in a bun.

Kiirettä pukkas ekana päivänä, mutta oli kivaakin. Vein lapsen kaverinsa kanssa aamupalalle, ja likat jäivät kaupungille shoppailemaan koulutarvikkeita. Alkuilta meni jäähallilla kauden avajaisissa. Huomenna lapsi kouluun ja mamma Jokiasemalle aamukahville!

Tomorrow it starts officially. My to-do list is alredy longer than it would be on a normal working day:
- shop for food
- clean bathrooms
- laundry
- make lunch for DD and her friend, who is spending the day with us
- mail paper work relating to sabbatical
- go to ice hall at 4 pm for the season's opening
- enjoy!

I have files dating back to 2006 on my work computer. I have no idea why I can't let go of them. I'm backing them up and preparing myself for tomorrow, when I go to the office and hand in my computer, phone, keys and external hard drive. Exciting, but a little scary, too.
